Effective Urban Rodent Ecology Knowledge Alliance (EUREKA)

An alliance of industry, rodentologists, public health professionals, and community stakeholders to encourage data-driven decision-making with implementation of data collection standards, digital tools, and a novel IoT network for assessing rodent populations and validating rodenticide alternatives.

What is the EUREKA Project?

EUREKA is a groundbreaking initiative funded by the California Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) aimed at accelerating the transformation to sustainable urban rodent management.

Ecologically-Based Rodent Management

By demonstrating the use of an Ecologically-Based Rodent Management (EBRM) toolkit, including sensors, smart traps, cameras, and immuno-contraceptives, this Alliance seeks to empower professionals with data to support their adoption.

Regulatory Change

While California's traditional chemical toolkit for rodent management hasn't been banned outright, recent regulatory changes have led to significant restrictions on rodenticides due to their impact on wildlife. Despite these important environmental protections, the need for effective rodent management to safeguard public health and property remains as critical as ever.

Open Data Ecosystem

To facilitate the research of rodents in their urban environments and data-driven decision-making, this project will develop digital tools, data collection standards, and an open data repository that professionals across the state can contribute to.

Adoption Through Action

EUREKA aims to drive widespread adoption of smarter pest management practices through practical action and measurable results. By providing pest management professionals with proven alternatives to traditional rodenticides, conducting real-world demonstrations across diverse urban settings, and creating accessible training resources, we're making sustainable rodent control not just possible but practical.

Department of Pesticide Regulation

Funding for this project has been provided in full or in part through a Grant awarded by the Department of Pesticide Regulation.

Our Mission

EUREKA’s mission is to harness the power of technology and science to develop smart, scalable rodent control systems that protect public health, foster innovation, and create sustainable solutions for our communities.

Project Outcomes

How EUREKA is Making an Impact

01.

Environmental Protection

Reduce reliance on harmful rodenticides to safeguard wildlife and ecosystems while promoting sustainable practices.

02.

Innovative Rodent Controls

Validate alternative tools like IoT sensors and smart traps to drive the pest control industry toward more effective, analytics-driven solutions.

03.

Data-Driven Insights

Establish a shared repository of standardized data to enhance industry practices and fuel academic research for more effective, science-backed pest management.

04.

Community Engagement

Empower local neighborhoods through our 'adopt-a-trap' program to improve rodent control, reduce costs, and engage municipalities in proactive pest management, similar to the successful 'adopt-a-drain' program.

Project Highlights

IoT Sensor-Network

Real-time detection and monitoring of rodent activity for precise, data-driven interventions.

Digital Application

Streamlined data collection and sharing for pest management professionals and vector districts across California.

Adopt-a-Trap Program

Smart trap deployment in underserved neighborhoods, showcasing effective pest management through community engagement.
